Matt Opperman Missing
I'm saddened to report that the search for American cyclist and father-of-two, Matt Opperman, has come to a tragic conclusion. A body, believed to be Opperman's, was discovered on February 16, 2025, near a bicycle in the Peña del Olivar area of Siles, Jaén, Spain. While official identification is pending, personal belongings and the bicycle found at the scene suggest it is him.
Opperman, 50, was last seen on January 24, 2025, when he embarked on a mountain biking trip in the Sierra de Segura region. His black Volkswagen van was found abandoned near Castillo de Segura de la Sierra, prompting an extensive search operation involving hundreds of volunteers, the Guardia Civil, sniffer dogs, drones, and helicopters.
Originally from Colorado, Opperman had been residing in Churriana, Málaga, for several years. He was a respected figure in the cycling community, working as a professional mechanic for companies like Yeti Cycles and serving as head mechanic for the Australian MTB team during the 2016 Rio Olympics.
The discovery has deeply affected his family, friends, and the cycling community. Tributes have poured in, with many expressing their sorrow and highlighting the significant loss to those who knew him well.
Our thoughts are with Matt Opperman's loved ones during this difficult time.
